| Vocabulary Postcard Swap #1 I love words and I love postcards, so I thought I would join
the two in a fun swap. Will you join me in an adventure?
Perhaps you will learn a new word or two or, if you know
the words already, it will give you a chance to use one of
them by sending a postcard that you think reflects the
meaning of one of the words. The way this swap works is as follows:
I have listed below five words that one does not
typically hear used in every day conversation. Also
provided is the definition of the word, several synonyms
(a synonym is a word or phrase that means exactly or
nearly the same thing), and an example of how the word
is used within a sentence. You will pick one postcard from your collection that
you think reflects one of the words, the meaning of the
selected word, or some aspect of what the word means.
Your interpretation can be creative, but you need to be
able to explain it (see next instruction). On the back of the card you need to identify yourself,
the name of the swap, the word your card is supposed to
represent, and why you think your card fits your chosen word. Address the postcard and send it to your partner. When you receive a postcard from the partner you were assigned to, please be open to the sender’s interpretation, even if you think it might seem a little far-fetched. This swap isn’t about receiving items that match our own interpretations, but in discovering how someone else interprets the same thing. Do not rate someone down because you don’t care for the card or the sender’s interpretation, if they have otherwise met the swap requirements. The postcard you send should be in good condition,
barring what might happen to it in transit. You must have a rating of at least 4.95 to play and no recent
unexplained ratings of 3 or 1. Here are the words from which you will choose one: BarbateDefinition: Having hair on the cheeks and chin.
 Synonyms: bearded, whiskered, shaggy, unshaven
Usage: I returned from the camping trip malodorous and
barbate, in desperate need of a shower and a shave.
ElephantineDefinition: Of great mass; huge and bulky.
 Synonyms: gargantuan, giant, jumbo, massive
Usage: As we approached the city, the silhouettes of its
elephantine buildings came into view.
ProtuberantDefinition: Swelling out from the surrounding surface.
 Synonyms: bulging, bulbous, rounded, arched
Usage: The huge and protuberant stomach was amply
supported by wide and massive hips, and the shoulders
were broad as those of a Hercules.
 RegnantDefinition: Exercising power or authority.
 Synonyms: reigning, ruling, predominant, sovereign
Usage: She became queen regnant upon the death of her
father and soon gained a reputation for being a firm but fair
ruler.
EdaciousDefinition: Devouring or craving food in great quantities.
Wanting to eat or drink more than one can reasonably
consume. Of or relating to eating.
 Synonyms: devouring, voracious, greedy, gluttonous
Usage: My edacious dining companion could always be
counted on to order the largest, and often most expensive,
item on the menu.
I hope you will join me in this swap and that it will be fun. Cynthia |
